RAMMED EARTH WALL

Rammed earth is a load bearing technique where earth is compacted in successive layers within a formwork. Once the proposed site for rammed earth wall is cleared, a trench is dug out upto a depth of one metre for laying the foundation. The foundation could be rammed earth, earthcrete, random rubble or as in this case, a conventional rcc foundation.

The formwork is erected on top of the foundation to a desired height and successive layers of moist earth is filled and compressed. The formwork is removed once the total wall height is rammed. It is crucial to keep in mind that the safe height to compress per day is one foot. In this project, we utilized red laterite soil available on site and also manifested various leaf frescos as a design feature.
